2013 New Orleans Oyster Festival

Thank You! Your rating has been saved.

Nearly 20 restaurants will be showing off the versatility of our region's favorite bivalve at the New Orleans Oyster Festival. Launched in 2010 by representatives of the Louisiana oyster community, the festival celebrates local oysters along with the men and women who harvest, process and cook them. Proceeds from the Festival support the Louisiana oyster community, fisherman and their families, and security for the 8th District Police Department.

Over the past two years, the festival has raised over $30,000 to support coastal restoration and the French Quarter. The Festival will once again feature oyster competitions including the Acme Oyster Eating Contest, the P&J Oyster Shucking Competition and the New Orleans Fish House Largest Oyster Contest.

We are putting together the best oyster restaurants in the city of New Orleans to deliver some outstanding dishes this festival year. Click the line-up below for more info! See ya at the fest!

You better not eat for days leading up to the 2013 New Orleans Oyster Festival. We have collected the best seafood restaurants New Orleans has to offer, and packed them into one area for two days. Who could ask for anything more?

From the Acme Oyster House Oyster Eating Contest to the P&J Shucking Contest, we cover them all! Come out to root for your favorite this year!

The oyster business is not the easiest thing to get into, much less survive in for over four generations. First you have to lease the grounds from the State. Nurture those grounds by building up your reefs with cultch (clam shell - oyster shell - lime stone - other rock.) Then you have to seed - plant onto the reefs, most of the time traveling on the other side of the river to load from the State reefs, and then wait for the oysters to grow. But in that time, challenges do arise: predation from drum fish and snails - thievery - hurricanes - tornado's - fresh water diversions - drought - red tide - State and Federal regulations - attrition (who wants to keep doing this type of hard work) and of course oil and gas issues.

Captain Wilbert is no longer working on the boat, but Nick and Levy are still at it. The future is uncertain, but their love and passion to produce great oysters is in their blood.

Maybe you'll have a chance to see the family at the Oyster Fest in New Orleans.

Ask them if they entered a monster sized oyster in the "Biggest Oyster Contest."
