Slow Food Sacramento proudly presents the 2013 Sacramento Food Film Festival!

This year's festival features an expanded slate of films, including bees and sushi making to the history of New York butchers and the plight of the farm worker. Sprinkled throughout the two days are interactive, informative, and educational activities.

The second Sacramento Food Film Festival expands to two days. Expand your knowledge of food issues with a series of documentaries and events. Friday includes Quest for Honey, a sushi tasting event, and Jiro Dreams of Sushi. Saturday's line-up includes films and discussions including A Community of Gardeners, What's on Your Plate?, Meat Hooked!, Symphony of the Soil, and American Harvest.

Concessions: Whole Foods Market will be supplying healthy movie snacks at the concession stand on Saturday.

Ticket sales supporting Slow Food Sacramento and The California Food Literacy Center

  • Friday special event: $40*
  • Saturday all day: $25
  • Entire weekend: $55
  • Individual films: $7

*Friday event ticket includes food, but beverages sold separately.

Panelists/Speakers

Bill Maynard - is a UC Cooperative Extension Master Gardener in Sacramento County, and has been involved with community gardening for over 15 years; he has designed, planned, constructed and given advice to community gardens and school gardens in California and other states as the vice president of the American Community Gardening Association - a 33 year old non-profit based in Columbus, Ohio.

  • He is the Community Garden Program coordinator for the City of Sacramento Dept. of Parks and Recreation where he oversees 12 community gardens.
  • He also helped on Maria Shrivers "WE" garden in Capital Park in Sacramento and the edible landscape around the California State Dept of Food and Agriculture in Sacramento; and has been involved with the USDA's People's Garden Inititive.
  • He has made presentations at conferences of the American Community Gardening Association, Growing Power in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, California State Conference and International Master Gardeners Conference, and the SW Regional Small Farm Conference, and many other garden related events.

Rhi Winders & Karin Meadows, Nevada County residents & honey bee advocates, are 1st time documentary filmmakers on a journey to discover the messages from the hive with The Quest for Local Honey. Not filmmakers by trade, Rhi is a poet and teen social worker offering "What's Up?" suicide prevention screenings and creative counseling through yoga & digital storytelling groups in Nevada County high schools. Karin is a bookkeeper, a seamstress specializing in up-cycled clothing, and now a freelance editor. They co-founded Whirled Beet Productions, turning clients' visions into digital media stories.
