Miami International Film Festival (MIFF) unveiled its extraordinary 2013 lineup this morning at MDC's historic Freedom Tower via a LIVE streaming feed as executive director, Jaie Laplante, spoke of milestones not only from the past but about forging ahead with new ones. MIFF will both open and close its 30th Edition with documentary feature films, another first in its colorful history. On the heels of its World Premiere at Sundance this month, Opening Night Gala film Morgan Neville's Twenty Feet From Stardom, showcases music's unheralded voices -- following women like Darlene Love and Judith Hill who have toiled for years as back-up singers to the likes of Bruce Springsteen and The Rolling Stones. The Festival will culminate with Awards Night on Saturday, March 9th with Maiken Baird and Michelle Major's revealing film, Venus and Serena, of the tennis-conquering Williams sisters, during the hardest year of their careers, as they defy skeptics to stay on top of their game. The full line-up, which includes 12 world premieres, seven international premieres, 13 North American premieres, and 15 U.S. premieres, was announced to the press today, and will be on-line at www.miamifilmfestival.com for Miami Film Society members' pre-purchase period starting Friday Feb. 1st.
The mission of the Miami International Film Festival (MIFF) is to bridge cultural understanding and encourage artistic development and excellence by provoking thought through film. By bringing the best of world cinema to Miami, MIFF presents the city and the film industry with a singular platform that fosters creative and technical talent.
The Miami International Film Festival had its beginnings as the main activity of the Film Society of Miami, Inc., which was founded in 1983. Since its first edition, which opened on February 3, 1984, the Festival has continued to bring the finest in world cinema to South Florida. The Festival has gained recognition with its consistently high quality of programming and presentations from filmmakers, critics, and the film industry. During the early years, films were screened in a variety of local theaters in the greater Miami area. By the sixth Festival in 1989, the Gusman Center for the Performing Arts had become the official residence.
