SANTA FE COMMUNITY COLLEGE SPRING ARTS FESTIVAL -FAMILY FUN, FINE ARTS, ENTERTAINMENT, GOOD FOOD

Free family entertainment abounds at Santa Fe Community College's 33rd annual Spring Arts Festival on historic NE 1st Street in downtown Gainesville. Admission is free.

Last year an estimated 128,000 people - many of them in families - attended the festival, a juried fine arts show that draws artists from across the United States.

There is truly something for everyone, especially children, at the festival and one of our goals is to provide a wide range of free entertainment

For instance, the festival has a tradition of featuring classical, modern and ethnic dance performances.

Youngsters can go to the free Kids Art Jungle at the Thomas Center, nearby at 302 NE 6th Avenue.

Here kids can have fun with clay, paint a picture or have their faces painted, pose behind a cutout of Mona Lisa and have their photo snapped, and even buy works from local young artists.

Our goal is for all young people to discover their own artist within, because national educational research shows that students who participate in the arts score higher in math and science and have improved social behavior skills.

At the Art Jungle, kids can try their hands at inexpensive arts and crafts they can also do at home, and that will provide them with a sense of well-being.

In these days of limited art education, the festival can provide an opportunity for children and their families to participate in the arts.

The Santa Fe Community College Spring Arts Festival is sponsored by SFCC in conjunction with the SFCC Endowment Corporation, the City of Gainesville, radio station WKTK and Alachua County Tourism Development.
