It's that time again - 49th annual Mid-South Sports, Boat & RV Show
The 49th annual Mid-South Sports & Boat show is coming to the Agricenter in East Memphis Feb. 15-17.
If wall to wall boats, fishing tackle, seminars, vacation destinations and even a chance to rub shoulders with some of the Mid-South's most well-known outdoors personalities aren't enough, the 49th annual Mid-South Sports & Boat Show will have some special guests.
One of its "biggest" special guest will be the Arkansas Game & Fish Commission's 3,000-gallon portable aquarium, which is 37 feet long, 8 feet tall and 8 feet wide and features 10-12 species of fish, including at buffalo, gar (maybe even an alligator guard), blue and flat head catfish (one that weighs 40-plus pounds), drum, common carp and largemouth bass.
"It's a show stopper," says Lea Gray, AGFC assistant aquatic resource education coordinator. "It's our biggest aquarium. We have smaller ones that we take to schools and smaller events, but this one is always something people like to see."
James ‘Bo' Davidson, who works out of the agency Lonoke hatchery, will be at show to talk to show visitors and answer questions about this unique part of the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission's public relations family.
Gray says many of the show's fishing seminars will be conducted on a platform over the aquarium; including those by noted Mid-South guide Tommy Cauley of Fish Finder Guide Service on Greers Ferry Lake near Heber Springs, Ark.
Among other seminar speakers:
C. Ward Weems, chief historian for the Tennessee State Parks based out of Nashville, will talk about the park system and its 75th anniversary. His presentation, as part of the show's seminars, will center on the cultural heritage interpreted in the state parks' system.
Gary Harlan of Tishomingo, Miss., will be another of the show's seminar speakers. He has been guiding on Pickwick Lake with nationally known angler Roger Stegall since 2006, fishing more than 100 days a year. One of Harlan's sponsors is Collierville-based Strike King Lure Company.
Mike Whitten, a Germantown based CPA, who has more than 38 years of tournament fishing experience, including Anglers Choice, Fishers of Men, BFL, BASS Weekend Series and local charity events. He is a two-time winner of the Pickwick Sauger Tournament and a regional qualifier for the Anglers Choice circuit in 1999, 2001 and 2002; winner of the 2001 Anglers Choice Rex Spoon Invitational at Log Loader; three top 10 finishes in the North Mississippi Anglers Choice (2001-2002) and first place tie in the 2003 Fishers of Men/North Mississippi. He is a published author since 2004 in Yamamoto's Inside Line magazine and is part of 15-20 seminars/speaking engagement a year.
