Big Mouth Thunder Thighs

Local theater artist Bess Welden will premiere her latest one-woman play, Big Mouth Thunder Thighs, at Portland Stage Company, February 14 through March 9, 2013. The show will be presented as part of Studio Rep, Portland Stage's new program designed "to build bridges between the theater, local artists, and audiences, [and] contribute to the vibrancy of Portland's theater ecology."

Big Mouth Thunder Thighs, a solo vaudeville about body and food, intertwines memoir storytelling with a highly-theatrical, unpredictable, and outrageously entertaining variety show featuring: roller-skating, stand-up comedy, country-western singing, flamenco dancing, a Shakespearean monologue, a Broadway style song and dance number, an Inuit folktale, original Spoken Word-style poems, and a series of five "Death-Defying Acts." It's a deeply personal and surprisingly funny one-woman extravaganza about hunger, appetite, largeness, enoughness, loneliness, aloneness, and what it takes for us to accept ourselves.

Welden, who wrote the script and performs the 80-minute show, also produced this inaugural production. "I am thrilled to have the support of the Maine Arts Commission, several local business sponsors and hundreds of individual contributors to bring the show to life in my home community," said Welden.

"It's also exciting to employ eight other Maine artists whose work has been integral to the development of this new play," added Welden. Jennie Hahn, Artistic Director of Open Waters Theatre Arts of South Portland, directs. The show's designers are Stacey M. Koloski (set/props), Christine Nilles (costumes), Chris Fitze (sound), Emily Kenny (lights), Alex Adams (puppet) with choreography by Deborah Freedman.
