Big Rock Blue Marlin Fishing Tournament

Thank You! Your rating has been saved.

The Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament is an exciting Crystal Coast tradition. The tournament is fished by approximately 100 competitors in substantial cash categories.

During this week-long event, visitors can view the live weigh-ins, pig out at the pig pickin', or get down at the Captain's Party. For the first time guest can enjoy fireworks.

According to Crystal Hesmer, Tournament Director with the Big Rock Marlin Tournament, East Carolina Council, BSA with offices in Kinston, NC has been awarded a $75,000 grant to build a land based pirate ship at Camp Sam Hatcher located at Newport, NC. The grant from the Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament will be matched by East Carolina Council, BSA with an additional $75,000.

Tom Bennett, Big Rock charity chairman stated, "An important reason for making the grant to East Carolina Council, BSA was their willingness to share in the cost of building the pirate ship. This is our first experience with an organization to ask for a matching gift instead of asking the Big Rock Marlin Fishing Tournament to fund the entire cost of the project." Many contributions of The Big Rock support children's charities such as their donations to Newport Developmental Center, Take a Kid Fishing, Hearts Cry Children's Ministry, and Carobell Station Club.

Ben, Moore, Strategic Planning Chair and past council president noted that the Pirate ship will be used primarily as a Cub Scout camping facility. It will have three cabins within the pirate ship, one for adult males, Cub Scout youth members and one for adult females. The top or deck of the ship will serve as a play area and stage for contest and other activities.

In recent years more stress has been placed on Cub Scout Camping by the Boy Scouts of America. Boy Scout troops tend to be more mobile and willing to travel farther distances. Cub Scout camping normally involves the entire family and therefore usually camp within 30 - 40 miles of home. East Carolina Council, BSA covers 20 counties within eastern North Carolina. The council is working to develop Cub Scout camping facilities at three of its camps to provide convenient camping facilities for Cub Scout packs. They are Camp Charles, Bailey, NC; Camp Boddie, Blounts Creek near Chocowinity; and Camp Sam Hatcher between Newport and Swansboro.
