Building Common Ground 2013
Mark your calendars for Building Common Ground 2013 and a stellar series of speakers!
MidTown, Inc. is partnering again with the Chattahoochee Valley Libraries for the second annual Building Common Ground, a series of three keynote programs. The 2013 program series is supported in part by a generous grant from the Knight Fund at the Community Foundation of the Chattahoochee Valley, Inc. Building Common Ground is designed to bring to MidTown and Columbus speakers of national renown and accomplishment to inform and elicit community conversation. Building Common Ground 2012 focused on issues that often divide us within a community: race, religion and politics.
Building Common Ground 2013 will focus on Building Community through the Arts and Popular Culture. In our diversity, a path to common ground may be found through the arts and popular culture. Music, poetry, stories, movies, television programs and sports infuse our day-to-day lives and collective memories: They are our "common ground." A stellar schedule of speakers is planned for the 2013 series:
Thursday, February 28 Community Built Through Stories, with David Isay, founder of STORYCORPS and recipient of five Peabody Awards and a MacArthur "Genius" Fellowship
Thursday, April 18 Community Inspired to Action Through Art, with Nikki Giovanni, renowned poet, writer and Civil Rights activist, and Professor of English and Black Studies at Virginia Tech
Thursday, October 3 Community Identity from Popular Culture, with Chuck Klosterman, best-selling author, blogger, and contributor to the sports site Grantland
Lectures are free and open to the public. Each program is followed by a reception, informal discussion and a book signing.
