Elena DeAngelis in Concert Excerpts of Pearl An Opera by Amy Scurria

Thank You! Your rating has been saved.

Join Elena DeAngelis, soprano and Amy Scurria, composer, for a one-night-only performance of excerpts from Scurria's new opera Pearl, an adaptation of Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter. This performance is part of the Greensboro Female Artist Collective "Female Artist Takeover" on March 8, 2013. The performance will take place in the Recital Hall at the Greensboro Cultural Center (200 N. Davie Street) at 8:00pm. Admission is a suggested donation of $10-$20. Free parking available in the Church Street Parking Deck.

Pearl is written from the perspective of Pearl, Hester Prynne's daughter, who is grown-up and now a writer and a mother herself. Adult Pearl lures scenes of The Scarlet Letter from out of her music; an aria in ‘present day' can weave into a duet with a young Hester, or even with her younger self. The most significant moments of The Scarlet Letter are enlivened in the opera. The concert presented by DeAngelis and Scurria will include music sung by both Adult Pearl and young Hester. Elena will be joined by eleven year old McKenzie Hall, in a duet between Hester and child Pearl as one of the selections. Hall is a private voice student of DeAngelis.

The March 8th performance of excerpts of Pearl featuring Elena DeAngelis and Amy Scurria will be roughly an hour in length, and include insights from the composer about each selection. DeAngelis will sing various selections from the opera, and Scurria will accompany her on piano. There will be a question and answer session following the performance. All are invited to attend this exciting one-night-only opportunity to hear some of the most stirring moments of what is sure to be a dynamic presence in the world of contemporary opera. This performance is sponsored in part by the Music Center at City Arts where Elena DeAngelis is the resident voice teacher.

Elena DeAngelis has appeared locally with Greensboro Opera, Eastern Music Festival and the Greensboro Symphony. When asked to be a part of the Female Artist Festival, she was honored and quickly brainstormed for an exciting concert idea. Having worked with Scurria a few years ago, Elena quickly reached out to Amy to collaborate on an evening of her music, but, Amy eagerly suggested excerpts from her new opera, Pearl, an adaptation of Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter.
