Food Preservation Workshops at Mohawk Harvest

July 23rd, 6:30-8 pm - Love the taste of summer? Freeze it!

Learn advantages and disadvantages of freezing, which containers are best to maintain quality, the proper way to prepare and pack fruits and vegetables for freezing, how to pack and prepare meat and prepared foods, and what to do if your freezer looses power.

July 31st, 6:30-8 pm - Love sun-dried tomatoes? Make your own!

Learn all about drying and dehydrating, including which foods work best, how to prepare foods for drying, the best way to dry your food (hint: no sun needed!), and how to pack and store your dried food.

August 7th , 6:30-8 pm - Introduction to Canning: Boiling water

Learn to can without any special equipment! Colleen will discuss how to select and prepare food for canning, how to properly fill jars and fit lids, and how to process foods safely and deliciously. She will also teach participants how to cool and store their canned foods. Add some decorative touches, and what could be better for the holidays?

August 14th, 6:30-8 pm - Canning part II: Pressure Canning

Pressure canners allow you to process your food faster and at a higher temperature, but they can be intimidating! Colleen will walk you through the supplies needed to pressure can, and will cover safety topics such as dial accuracy, steam release, and altitude adjustments. She will again discuss food preparation for canning, proper canning procedure to fill and process jars, and proper cooling and storage.

About Mohawk Harvest

Mohawk Harvest was started in 2009 when a group of private citizens got together said "Wouldn't it be great to have a food cooperative in downtown Gloversville. We could support our local farmers & producers by featuring their goods, be part of the revitalization of downtown Gloversville AND provide good nutritious food at fair prices to our consumers."

Within ONE year, we opened our first store at 51 N. Main street. It was small, we couldn't carry as many products and as much local produce as we wanted BUT it was a food cooperative, we had member-owners, we had customers, we were on Main Street and our local farmers & producers were selling directly to us.

TWO years after that, we were able to move to our beautiful current location at 30 N. Main Street - we had so much more room and were able to carry so much more merchandise; we opened a deli that serves delicious lunches in a pleasant environment everyday; Happy Jack's joined us and Gloversville had a coffee shop with on-site coffee roasting; Micropolis Art Gallery joined us to showcase local artists and crafts-people.

SO, we're buying and selling much more produce & products from local farmers & vendors, we're providing our customers with even more nutritious items AND we REALLY are part of the revitalization of Main Street!

We couldn't have done any of it without you - our member-owners and shoppers. Together we have accomplished wonders and don't intend to stop!
