In 1996, nine galleries banded together to form Gallery Night Providence. Ten years and twenty-three galleries later, Gallery Night Providence has grown into a regional visual arts extravaganza. Four art buses travel the neighborhoods of Providence depositing people at galleries, museums and historic sites. Over 10,000 people each year enjoy exhibitions, demonstrations, lectures, live music and performances.
The New York Times, The Boston Globe, Yankee Magazine and several travel magazines have featured articles on Gallery Night Providence. Visitors from as far away as India, England, Texas and Arizona have taken part. People from all walks of life and all nations have come to Providence to sample the city's rich visual arts scene.
Gallery Night Providence runs for nine months of the year, from March through November. One night a month, on the third Thursday from 5 to 9 p.m., twenty-three galleries and museums open their doors to a visual arts party. Free parking is available at eight conveniently located parking lots. Its fun, its free and its fabulous!
WALK
Park free at any one of the many parking lots situated conveniently throughout the city and stroll from gallery to gallery, enjoying the Providence skyline and the historic city streets. Use the brochure maps to discover the galleries, museums, art spots, and parking lots just a short walk from one another.
TAKE THE ART BUS
New this year are theme-dedicated tours leaving at 5:30, 5:50, 6:10, 6:30, 6:50, 7:10. Tours stop at approximately 4 galleries each and run about 2 hours. Park free at our central location at One Regency Plaza located at the end of Greene (2nd parking lot on the left) in back of the Providence Public Library.
DRIVE
Stop at our information center at One Regency Plaza and learn about the evening's exhibitions. Choose the exhibits that interest you the most and drive directly to the parking lot nearest the gallery of your choice.
BIKE
Art Bike Tours are a relatively new feature for Gallery Night. Looking for an affordable alternative to driving? Ride your bike to Regency Place and meet up with other avid art bike fans. Art Bike Tours are available in the summer months.
CELEBRITY GUIDED TOURS
Celebrity Guided Tours offer the public a chance to mix and mingle with people who care deeply about art. Celebrities Guides run the gamut from the curators and academics who shape opinions about art to the artists whose lives' work is giving form to their passion. Take a tour and follow in the footsteps of someone who thinks a lot about art and enhance your personal point of view.
WALKING TOURS
Walking tours are available starting from Regency Place weather permitting.
Information Center Gallery Night Providence offers a new location for our central Art Bus depot and information booth. We are located at Regency Plaza in downtown Providence best described, in true Rhode Island fashion, as directly behind where the old Providence Police Station used to be. Kitty corner from the rear of the Providence Public Library on Greene Street, a hop, skip, and a jump from the Dunkin Donuts Center, Regency Plaza offers us our first time ever indoor information booth for those rare less-than-perfect evenings in Providence.
Park Free at any one of the seven parking lots situated conveniently throughout the city and walk to your favorite gallery. Stroll from gallery to gallery, enjoying the Providence skyline and the historic city streets. Use the brochure maps to discover the galleries, museums, art spots, and parking lots just a short walk from one another.
Ride the Art Bus through Providence. Park your car at our new central location at Regency Plaza located on the corner of Greene and Fountain Streets, conveniently located near both the Dunkin Donuts center and the Providence Public Library. Board the Art Bus, or pick up the bus from any one of your favorite galleries. Art Busses circulate the city from 5 to 9 p.m. The final run for each Art Bus is at 8:40 p.m. Be sure to catch the last bus to return you to your car.
Gallery Night Guides are stationed at Regency Place and ride the Art Busses. They offer information about different art exhibitions and point out the city's historic and architectural treasures.
