Mercer County Touch-A-Truck event ready to roll on Oct. 27

Whether looking out from the cab of a massive dump truck, feeling the power of the claw of a tough bulldozer, or getting behind the wheel of a larger-than-life fire engine, Mercer County Improvement Authority's annual Touch-A-Truck event offers children of all ages an opportunity to experience the vehicles that get the job done.

"Everyone loves this popular event because it turns kids into participants instead of spectators as they get a chance to sit in the driver's seat of these rigs," said Mercer County Executive Brian M. Hughes. "We owe a big thanks to our sponsors who donate time, funds and equipment year after year for this great family event."

In addition to fire trucks, dozens of other vehicles including ambulances, loaders and garbage trucks will be on display.

New to the event this year will be The Boys & Girls Club Bike Exchange. Families may bring their unwanted bikes and donate them to the club. Proceeds from the sale of the recycled bikes will help support the after-school programs at the Boys & Girls Clubs in Trenton and Newark. For more information on the program, please visit www.BikeExchangeNJ.org.

The family-friendly event will be held rain or shine. County employees and owners of area companies will display their polished vehicles and will be on hand to answer questions-and to allow children to climb in or on their vehicles.

Robo Willie, the Mercer County Improvement Authority's mascot, will be making a special appearance along with Bob the Builder and Rivet of the Trenton Titans. Touch-A-Truck will also feature a food court and face painter.

Sponsors of the event are: Hawk's Towing, Joseph Jingoli and Son Inc., New Jersey Education Association, L & S Contracting. Construction Industry Advancement Program of New Jersey, Sun National Bank Center and Waste Management. The New Jersey Bike Exchange is a non-profit organization run by the efforts of volunteers who collect, condition, and sell used, quality bikes from shops in Plainfield, Newark, and Trenton. The Bike Exchange offers a large selection of low cost bikes for all riders, from 3 years of age to 100 years of age, from occasional or weekend riders to serious or frequent riders. All bikes sold are reconditioned and ready to ride. Drivers can test ride before purchase.

The missions of the Bike Exchange:

1) To provide low cost, quality bikes for families and individuals in Mercer County, Plainfield, and Newark.

2) To raise money for the Boys & Girls Club of Trenton, Plainfield, and Newark, NJ. All proceeds from the sales

of the bikes go to support the Trenton, Newark, and Plainsfield Boys & Girls Club's after-school programs.

To volunteer, go to "Contact Us" and send us a quick message, telling us why you are interested in volunteering. We currently need volunteers to repair bikes, to help donators move bikes to our shop, and to aid customers in selecting a bike.

The Bike Exchange accepts bike donations. The Trenton Bike Exchange also accepts store-quality bikes on consignment. Bikes accepted for consignment must be in good condition. The Boys & Girls Club Bike Exchange charges $75.00 for selling a consigned bike. The owner of the bike will receive all proceeds from the sale less than $75.00. Bikes for consignment must be delivered to the Exchange's shop during our business hours (Thursdays between 5:00PM and 7:45PM and Saturdays between 10:00PM and 3:45PM).
