Summer 2013 iPad Media Camp
iPad Media Camp is a three day series of hands-on workshops designed to inspire and equip educators to facilitate student media projects using iPads. Participants should BYOI (bring your own iPad) to camp. iPad Media Camp is led and facilitated by Dr. Wesley Fryer, author of the 2011 ebook "Playing with Media: simple ideas for powerful sharing" and the 2013 ebook, "Mapping Media to the Common Core." Check out the two minute video trailer for iPad Media Camp to learn more!
Participants will learn activities and assessment strategies aligned to the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) Initiative, Oklahoma C3 Priority Academic Student Skills (formerly "PASS Standards") and the National Educational Technology Standards for Teachers and Students.
Day 1: Screencasting and Narrated SlideShows
Learn how to create and share screencasts and narrated slideshows online using an iPad including recorded audio synchronized to selected photographs or images. We'll view different examples of student-created narrated slideshows using the iPad and review effective processes for facilitating student narrated slideshows. iPad Applications for creating narrated slideshows we will explore include ShowMe, Educreations and Explain Everything. Additional resources included on the "Narrated Slideshow/Screencast" page of "Mapping Media to the Common Core" will be shared.
Day 2: Quick Edit Videography
Learn to shoot, edit, and publish a video on an iPad in a fraction of the time this process takes with a laptop computer and "traditional" video gear! Participants will learn:
- How to setup and use a free YouTube account
- How to use their iPad video camera, the iMovie app, and YouTube to create and publish "quick edit" videos.
- Techniques for recording, editing, and publishing higher quality iPad videos, including use of the YouTube Capture app
- How to successfully facilitate student-created iPad videos.
- Options for puppet videography with iPads, including actual finger puppets as well as virtual puppets using apps like Puppet Pals.
On Air (a teleprompter app), and PhotoSync (an app for sharing/transferring photos & videos to iPads) will also be used and demonstrated. Prepare to have fun and unleash a wealth of creative ideas on your students during and following this session! Additional resources included on the "Quick Edit Video" page of "Mapping Media to the Common Core" will be shared.
Day 3: Interactive Writing and eBooks
Learn how to setup, use and moderate content on a classroom blog to improve student writing skills. A moderated classroom blog is the ideal platform to use to share announcements, classroom news, and student work for a public audience. In this workshop we'll learn to use the free blogging platform KidBlog (powered by Wordpress) and continue using Edmodo as our class "Learning Management System." We'll learn how to create enhanced/multimedia eBooks including digital text, hyperlinks, images, and embedded videos using the iPad. These will include Book Creator for iPad and Storykit. Additional resources included on the "Interactive Writing" and "eBook" pages of "Mapping Media to the Common Core" will also be shared.
